The Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) aims to deliver equitable, effective water and greenhouse gas reductions across the state. BASIX is one of the strongest sustainable planning measures to be undertaken in Australia.
An integrated part of the planning system, BASIX is implemented under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act. BASIX applies to all residential dwelling types and is part of the development application process in NSW.
In NSW, BASIX regulations override the requirements of BCA for energy efficiency of new homes. BASIX online tool accepts NatHERS rating results when derived from accredited software tools and performed by an accredited energy rater.
This tutorial will show you how to use the online computer program, understand what parts of the building works are affected by BASIX and what information you need to effectively prepare a BASIX certificate.

The BASIX assessment targets three key areas:
In each of the three key areas, a pre-determined target will need to be met to secure your BASIX certificate. What is required to meet the target will depend on the building materials, building services and style of house being constructed. There are help notes and hints available in the BASIX tool to help you make appropriate design and building selections to meet the targets.
By completing this On-Line tutorial on the use of the BASIX, energy rating assessors will earn 1 CPD point.
