Building Certifiers – Understanding Energy Ratings

Are you certain the energy rating certificate you are signing off on is correct?

It is vitally important that Certifiers understand how house energy ratings are calculated and what thermal performance measures are included.

Certifiers have recently been reminded of the need for the certifier to be satisfied that the completed building (or part of the building) is suitable for occupation or use in accordance with its classification under the Building Code of Australia. The ABCB recently announced maximum heating and cooling load limits for the NatHERS pathways in the NCC, to support improving the performance of new homes in Australia.

By undertaking the course CPP41119 Certificate IV in Home Energy Efficiency & Sustainability, Building Certifiers will have the ability to review energy rating outcomes immediately and ensure they meet the required standards.

Complete this course entirely On-Line.

The NatHERS assessment Certificate IV course is designed for energy rating under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) throughout Australia.

Learn Essential skills

You will learn how to meet the mandatory energy efficiency requirements for homes and major renovations based on the National Construction Code as well as advising home owners, architects and builders on the energy efficiency of various house designs. Included in the EIB course are ways to advise prospective home buyers on the thermal performance of a home they are interested in buying.

While studying how to use the Software tools you will learn essential skills such as:

✅ thermal resistance and capacitance of building materials

✅ window glazing values

✅ occupancy patterns (including internal heat loads, typical occupancy times and occupancy behaviour)

✅ window coverings (which are standardised for all ratings, noting they are likely to change of the life of the building)

✅ different types of zones in the house and whether they are conditioned/unconditioned

✅ thermostat settings (temperatures at which artificial heating/cooling is no longer required to achieve thermal comfort, noting this varies depending on climate zone)

✅local climate and weather (including temperature, humidity, wind and sun)

✅shadowing/overshadowing by adjacent buildings and features

✅ size of the building being assessed (noting smaller buildings generally have a larger wall surface area than bigger buildings)
