Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme

Stage 1 of the expansion of the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) to include existing home ratings has commenced!

Participants who successfully complete their training with EIB will establish their status as a professional NatHERS for existing homes Assessor. 

Education In Building is now offering the training pathways for the 7 units of competency from the Certificate IV in Home Energy Efficiency and Sustainability (CPP41119) in your preparation for undertaking NatHERS for existing homes in mid 2026

This training is completed entirely On-Line.

Our NatHERS for existing homes training allows participants to understand and improve the energy efficiency of a home through a new star rating system. The star rating is a great way to show the value of investing in a better performing and more comfortable home.

What are the requirements?

To become a NatHERS for existing homes assessor you will be required to provide evidence to demonstrate you have completed the minimum training requirements. This includes successful completion of:

  • 7 units of competency from the Certificate IV in Home Energy Efficiency and Sustainability (CPP41119). Available now.
  • a new training unit specific to NatHERS for existing homes (Conduct NatHERS for existing homes assessments). Under development.
  • training in at least one NatHERS software tool for assessments of existing homes. Under development. 

What are the principles?

These units provide the skills and knowledge required to source and analyse information on the thermal performance of existing residences. It includes providing advice on ways to improve thermal performance accounting for ownership and type of building, costs and practicalities of implementing improvement recommendations.

Aimed at individuals who work independently using specialised knowledge to complete routine and non-routine tasks and deal with predictable and sometimes unpredictable problems in sustainability practices within the home.

Stage 2

Stage 2 will commence following the integration of feedback and learnings from Stage 1 and the scale-up period. Stage 2 will improve NatHERS for existing homes and bring ratings to a wider audience. During Stage 2:

  • a second-generation tool, assessment method and processes will be released
  • accreditation will be opened to all interested assessors
  • more opportunities will be provided for households to get an assessment.

Stage 2 is expected to commence from mid-2026.

Stay informed

From early 2026, during the scale-up period:

  • assessor accreditation is expected to transfer from the NatHERS Administrator to a third-party service provider
  • training and accreditation is expected to be made available to additional target groups.
