What is NatHERS?

The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) rates homes on a zero-to-ten star scale, estimating a home’s heating and cooling energy needs before it’s built or renovated. This simple star rating acts as a “measuring tape” for energy efficiency, helping Australians design and live in homes that are more comfortable, affordable, and sustainable.

By encouraging smarter design choices, NatHERS shows how good thermal performance can often be achieved with little or no additional construction cost—reducing the energy needed to keep homes comfortable year-round and lowering household energy bills.

Embedded in the National Construction Code (NCC), NatHERS plays a critical role in improving the performance of residential buildings and reducing the greenhouse gas impacts of Australia’s housing sector. It is used by state and territory governments nationwide to support higher standards of energy efficiency in new homes and major renovations.

Administered by the federal government Department of Environment and Energy, NatHERS underpins a national commitment to better housing outcomes—delivering long-term benefits for homeowners, communities, and the environment.

Your Pathway to Becoming a NatHERS Energy Assessor

To become a NatHERS‑accredited House Energy Rating Assessor, you’ll need to:

  • Complete an approved qualification, such as the
    CPP41126 Certificate IV in Home Energy Efficiency & Sustainability.
  • Apply for membership with an Assessor Accrediting Organisation (AAO).
  • Nominate the NatHERS‑accredited software you will use.
  • Complete a Quality Assurance review within your first 12 months.
  • Comply with the NatHERS Code of Ethical Practice.
  • Complete 12 CPD points each year to maintain accreditation.
  • Hold appropriate professional indemnity insurance.
  • Conduct assessments in line with the latest NatHERS Technical Notes, the NCC, and workplace health and safety requirements.

Once accredited, you can work as a professional Energy Assessor anywhere in Australia, supporting better‑designed, more energy‑efficient homes.

Complete accredited training

Online and self-paced, this Certificate IV training can take from 6 – 12months depending on the amount of time you can dedicate each week. We recommend 8 – 10 hours a week for a 6 month completion.

You will come out of this course proficient in all the NatHERS assessment requirements and software applications.
