The demand for Energy Assessors is growing

Australia is in the middle of one of the most ambitious housing pushes in its history. Under the National Housing Accord, the Federal Government has committed to delivering 1.2 million new, well-located homes by June 2029. This target was agreed between the Commonwealth, the states and territories, and industry.

It’s a big number, and the latest supply data shows the country is currently tracking behind the pace required to get there. That means one thing for the construction sector over the next few years: building activity needs to accelerate significantly. In addition, this must happen fast to close the gap.

Every one of those new homes will need an energy rating.

Since the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022 update, new houses must be designed to meet a 7-star NatHERS thermal performance rating. There is also a Whole of Home energy budget that accounts for the appliances and fixtures installed. This isn’t a future proposal — it’s already been adopted, with only minor variation in timing and detail, across the country’s states and territories. As a result, it now applies to the design stage of virtually every new home approved.

In practical terms, this means a qualified energy assessment has become a standard, non-negotiable step in the residential building process — not a niche add-on.

Put those two facts together, and the opportunity is clear

A national housing shortfall that needs to be urgently addressed, combined with a mandatory energy assessment on every new home design, points to sustained and growing demand for qualified home energy assessors in the years ahead. As commencements ramp up to meet the Accord’s target, so too will the number of assessments required to get those homes approved.
