Understanding Thermal Performance Modelling in NatHERS

What is thermal performance modelling?

Thermal performance modelling is the process of building a digital representation of a residential home using NatHERS-accredited software such as AccuRate HERO, FirstRate5 or BERS Pro. The model draws together a wide range of building data, including orientation, construction materials, insulation levels, glazing specifications, shading devices and local climate conditions, to create an accurate picture of how the home will behave.

How the simulation works

Once the building information is entered, the software runs thousands of calculations to simulate the home’s thermal behaviour across a full year of changing weather. These simulations track how heat enters, escapes and moves through the building envelope, producing two key outputs: the home’s annual heating and cooling loads, and its NatHERS star rating, on a scale from 0 to 10 stars.

Some of the most rewarding challenges in this field come from understanding how glazing, shading and orientation interact — because even small design decisions can make a big difference to outcomes. Increasing north-facing glazing, for instance, can boost valuable winter solar gains, while too much west-facing glazing can significantly increase summer cooling loads. Getting the balance right, along with selecting the best-fit insulation levels and construction systems, is central to achieving strong energy efficiency outcomes and NCC compliance.
